On an invitation or a poster, the person scans and their phone offers to add the date, time and place directly to their calendar.
What the phone offers on scan
The code stores an event in iCalendar format, with a title, a start and end time, and a location. On iPhone, the native camera offers to add the event to the calendar directly. On Android, the exact behaviour depends a little on the camera or the reader app being used at the time.
The person stays in control of adding it: nothing writes itself into a calendar automatically, they confirm with a tap before the event actually appears there. That confirmation step stops an accidental scan from filling someone's calendar with an appointment they never asked for or wanted in the first place.

A wedding or birthday invitation, tucked into the card with the date ready to save. A conference or trade show pass, where each attendee adds the sessions they care about. A school open day or a webinar, announced on a poster or an email, with the exact time already attached.
What is worth checking before sending it out
Time zone and local time matter a lot for an online or international event, a wrong hour in the file makes someone miss the very appointment they added to their calendar in good faith. Always spell out the location, even for a video call, with the join link written in plain text.
Test the code on an iPhone and an Android before printing or sending it out widely, since the behaviour on scan is not quite identical on both. On paper, keep a white margin, strong contrast and at least 2cm a side, more for a poster read from across a room.
